Maternity Services

Parenting and Pregnancy Classes (Antenatal classes)

Counties Manukau District Health Board (CMDHB) funds a number of Parenting and Pregnancy Classes across the district. These are via 3 contracted providers. There are also a number of private Parenting and Pregnancy services available. The free classes are open to all eligible parents-to-be who live in the CMDHB area and some classes are provided specifically for young mothers.

Classes are run for a minimum of 12 hours, but this may be offered over a number of short weekly classes or via weekend classes. The courses cover:

Access to Maternity services
- Role of Lead Maternity Carers (LMCs) and other health professionals
- Entitlements to maternity services
- Cultural and support networks in the community
- Complaints procedures
Pregnancy Care
- Health promotion
- Exercise
- Warning signs
Labour and Birth care
- Signs of labour
- Options available for labour and birth
- Role of support person and whanau/family
- Common complications of labour and birth and interventions
Care following the birth
- Entitlements and Well Child services
- Physical and emotional changes
- Post natal self-care
- Early parenting skills
- Safety of the baby
- Emergency contacts and access to 24/7 care
- Role of primary care
- Health promotion / education
- Benefits and importance of breastfeeding
