Maaori Health Schools Programme -
Taiohi Towards Health
|
|
Through Taiohi Towards Health, Counties Manukau DHB works
with Kura and whaanau to encourage Maaori students in Counties Manukau
to take up health careers.
Programmes We Offer
Science Camps
If you
are Year 10 or 11 you are eligible to attend the annual Science
Sizzler. You will have the opportunity to take part in exciting
science experiments and be exposed to situations in everyday life where
science is put into practice. It’s a one day interactive programme
that’s held twice a year at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) and
The University of Auckland. The first Science Sizzler is in late May for
40 Year 11 students who attended the previous year. The second Science
Sizzler is in August for 40 new Year 10 students. Teachers nominate
taiohi from each Kura – so make sure you get involved!
SCI-TECH
is a three
day science and technology programme that will motivate and
inspire you to pursue science related career pathways. If you are Year
11 you will be able to participate in thrilling workshops which cover
mechatronics, chemistry, food technology haematology, marine
ecology, medical science, human measurement and much more. SCI-TECH
takes place in early July at AUT, Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT)
and Unitec. Ask your careers advisor or science teacher for more
information.
Work Exposure Days
On a work exposure day,
you will get a taste of what different health professionals do and what
actually happens in a health care environment. You will experience first
hand what it is like to be in the shoes of a health professional.
Activities range from scrubbing up for theatre and carrying out a mock
surgery to performing CPR on dummies. Throughout the day, health
professionals also share their experiences with you personally and will
answer any questions that you may have about working in health. If you
want to check out what Middlemore is like behind the scenes talk to your
Science Teacher or Careers Advisor, you may just discover that Health
Could B 4 U!
Leadership
Dinner
Are you a
student leader in your Kura? Are you a high achiever? Are you passionate
about being a positive role model to your Maaori peers? You may be
nominated by your Kura to attend our annual leadership dinner, hosted by
Taiohi Towards Health. At this dinner we will recognise the achievements
and leadership qualities of our South Auckland taiohi. Participating
Kura nominate 2-3 outstanding Year 12 or Year 13 leaders to attend. If
you have been involved in the Taiohi Towards Health programme or are
thinking of studying science at tertiary level you will be given
preference to attend. As well as celebrating with your peers your
whaanau are also invited to the occasion.
Summer
Internships
During
the summer holidays, placements are offered to a selection of Maaori
taiohi who have been through the Taiohi Towards Health programme and are
currently studying Science at tertiary level. These are paid
internships. If you are currently at university and are looking for
valuable work experience this is an opportunity for you. You will gain
practical skills and a greater understanding of your desired health
profession. These are not the only benefits! After your placement is
complete, CMDHB will attempt to give interns full time employment in
their chosen health profession for the following year.
