What is a DHB?

District Health Boards (DHBs) are responsible for providing, or funding the provision of, health and disability services in their district.

There are 21 DHBs in New Zealand. The statutory objectives of DHBs include:

  • improving, promoting and protecting the health of communities
  • promoting the integration of health services, especially primary and secondary care services
  • promoting effective care or support of those in need of personal health services or disability support.

Other DHB objectives include promoting the inclusion and participation in society and independence of people with disabilities, reducing health disparities by improving health outcomes for Maori and other population groups, and to reduce toward elimination, health outcome disparities between various population groups.

DHBs are expected to show a sense of social responsibility, to foster community participation in health improvement, and to uphold the ethical and quality standards commonly expected of providers of services and public sector organisations.

Counties Manukau DHB (CMDHB) includes Middlemore Hospital, Manukau SuperClinic™, Franklin Memorial Hospital, and many other periphery sites. Please click here to view the CMDHB District Map.

What is CMDHB's Leave Policy?

Leave provisions depend entirely on your current and future employment agreements. This is a great question to bring up at your interview or with your hiring manager if you are offered a position. As the Holidays Act 2003 states, in most cases any annual leave balance is paid out when an employee resigns so is not transferred between employers/DHBs.

What's the best way to find out what vacancies you have?

It’s just one click away – here!

Where can I find out some information about scholarships?

There are a variety of organisations that offer funding support for people wanting to train in the field of health. Click here to go to our scholarships page or you can also get information about other sources at the Career Services website.

Who can I talk to about having a career in health?

Talking to people who know you is a good idea.  Your friends, family and colleagues, or ex-colleagues can generally offer support and advice.  People who are doing the work you are interested in are also good to talk to and give you information about their experience of the job.  The people recruiting for positions have a good amount of knowledge about what is needed for each specific role and if you are still unsure, you can talk to a career professional.  Career consultants are trained to offer expert guidance and information to support your career decision-making.  If you are a CMDHB employee you can contact our in-house career consultant Joanna Budai budaij@middlemore.co.nz or if you are not an employee yet you can contact Career Services by calling 0800 222 733.
