Of the areas under analysis
Manurewa is the largest with just over 82,000 residents in 2006
(Table
1.1).
There is a slight preponderance of females over males in all
areas, mirroring the New Zealand pattern.

Manurewa has the
largest number of children of all the areas in CMDHB (Table 1.2
and
Figure 1.1).
Mangere and Otara have the highest proportions of children in
their populations, but even the areas with the lowest child
proportions are above the New Zealand average of 21%. For
adults aged 15-64 Howick/Pakuranga has the highest number,
followed by Manurewa. The highest proportions of adults are in
Howick/Pakuranga and Botany/Clevedon, the only areas to exceed
the NZ average of 67%. For the 65 and over population the main
concentration is in Howick/Pakuranga, with Franklin and Manurewa
following. Franklin and Howick/Pakuranga have the highest
proportions - approaching the New Zealand average of 12%.

Areas within CMDHB vary dramatically by
ethnicity. Maori are particularly concentrated in Manurewa and
Papakura –these two areas have 46% of CMDHB Maori residents.
For Pacific Mangere and Otara are the main areas, housing 59% of
all Pacific in CMDHB. For Asian Howick/Pakuranga,
Botany/Clevedon and Papatoetoe have 65% of the Asian residents
of CMDHB. Howick has more people of Chinese origin, Papatoetoe
more from Indian ethnicities. For the ‘Other’ group (mainly
European/Pakeha) a quarter live in Howick/Pakuranga. More
detail on the projected future growth of each ethnicity is given
below.
